Alonzo's Story
After graduation I joined the U.S. Army for four years. That's right, I enlisted. It was something that my father instilled in me for the duty we owed our country. He was right but the 60's were not the good years for being in the Army.
Yes, I went to Vietnam. Landing during the TET offensive of '68. I was headed for the 525th military intelligence unit in Saigon attached to the embassy. Instead, the Army saw my jump wings with rank and sent me to the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the central highlands. No, I was not infantry. In fact my training had never included the need for combat but here I was humping the boonies as a squad leader with 9 privates looking for me to lead. Four months after this mistake was corrected, I did something special that I was awarded the Bronze Star. Long story and it is in a screen play I am writing, so you need to wait for that.
Upon returning to the states, I was assigned to the AFEES in Seattle and Los Angeles. You will need to wait for that book to be published to understand what the draft was about in 1969 and 1970. But in the states, Jan McCormack and I were married. Yes, Ken McCormack's little sister. We had almost 16 years and made 2 wonderful and great sons. If you ever go to the Moonli...Expand for more
ght Theatre in Vista, you see what my oldest produces as he is the Technical Director. If you ever are broken down in Vista, the young man who stops to help you will probably be my youngest son. He is a great mechaninc and always, always, is there for you. I have 3 beautiful grandchildren (thanks Jan) and another on the way.
After the Army, I went to SDSU and graduated in 1976 with a triple major of Telecommunications and Film, Dramatic Art and Journalism to be a critic of mass media. But 33 years later I retired from United Airlines where I started as a Flight Attendant. One of the first men FAs but that is another screenplay.
Ok, enough. This all sounds good but the truth is with United's bankruptcy and two failed marriages, my life is amongst those that question just where our country is headed to. I thank Jan and my son, Ben, for helping me because if not for them - well, it is not where I thought my life would be. Sometimes doing all the right things, graduation from high school and college; highly awarded military record; 30 year career with a major corporation and now... At least I have found someone who loves me and we have been together for more than 10 years. I thank the spirits for her every day and wonder ?????
