After graduation I joined the U.S. Army for four years. That's right, I enlisted. It was something that my father instilled in me for the duty we owed our country. He was right but the 60's were not the good years for being in the Army. Yes, I went to Vietnam. Landing during the TET offensive of '68. I was headed for the 525th military intelligence unit in Saigon attached to the embassy. Instead, the Army saw my jump wings with rank and sent me to the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the central highlands. No, I was not infantry. In fact my training had never included the need for combat but here I was humping the boonies as a squad leader with 9 privates looking for me to lead. Four months after this mistake was corrected, I did something special that I was awarded the Bronze Star. Long story and it is in a screen play I am writing, so you need to wait for that. Upon returning to the states, I was assigned to the AFEES in Seattle and Los Angeles. You will need to wait for that book to be published to understand what the draft was about in 1969 and 1970.
